‘Joy’ Grows Out of A Promise
“Joy…in the Morning” debuted in February 1985 as a freelance inspirational column appearing weekly in an award-winning daily newspaper published out of northeastern Pennsylvania.
Written by freelance writer Dotty Moore, the first few columns ran on a trial basis. Reader response was so favorable the feature became a regular on the religion pages.
For nearly 21 years the popular uplifting messages of “Joy…in the Morning” continued each week, offering comfort, encouragement and hope to regional readers of the secular press. One of the early columns was awarded Fourth Place in the national Amy Foundation Writing Awards.
Twenty-one years with nearly 1,100 columns is an exceptionally long time for a column of this nature to run amid breaking news, national, state and local politics and other news events and surroundings. Much of the column’s appeal stems from the seed out of which the column sprouted in the first place: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” found in the Bible in Psalm 30:5 (New King James Version).
When the door to the secular press abruptly closed in December 2005, disappointed readers, one by one, urged columnist Dotty Moore to continue writing. Countless readers voiced a confidence that the Lord would open another door. Within a month a new door did indeed open: this Web site at www.joyinthemorningetc.org.
The ‘Joy…in the Morning’ etc. Web site, right here and now, was actually proposed by one of the readers. That same reader not only suggested presenting the column in an Internet ministry format, but also she and her husband sent a check to help get it started.
People in a hurting world welcome the promise of a deep, dark night becoming a bright morning of joy. The “Joy” column nudges readers to claim the promise while inviting them to cling to the God who can be trusted to honor His promise.
Readers identify with the down-to-earth, often humorous stories as Dotty Moore draws on personal illustrations, real-life anecdotes and thought-provoking observations along with Scriptures from the Bible to communicate the recurring theme: In God, our tears will one day be transformed into joy!
