Lessons From A Mouse

by Karen Musitano

You've read the scripture, "Greater love hath no man  than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13

And now my little mice demonstrate this.  You know the scenario.  There is someone, maybe in your class, in your workplace, in your church, that appears to be unlovable.

Maybe they are unkempt.  Maybe they don't dress nice.  Maybe they don't use deodorant. Maybe they have bad breath.

Consider this: My little mouse, Cocoa Bean, suffers from OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) in combination with what we have come to believe is a genetic syndrome, linked to a gene, called excessive grooming, in which she scratches herself until her skin is red, raw, bleeding, and missing fur.  Despite countless numbers of anti-itch creams, lotions, antibiotics, mite dips, and even baby diaper rash cream, Cocoa Bean's skin remains raw.  Healthy and exuberant otherwise, I feel so sad when I look at her stubs of her ears, and her raw skin that almost completely encircle her neck.

And then one day, I witnessed the most heartwarming "laying your life down by a friend."

Her little companion mouse, that I call "Cocoa Bean's Buddy", lay nestled right up next to her with no thought in mind as to how Cocoa Bean looked. The little buddy accepted Cocoa Bean just as she was.  Can we do any less to our fellow man?  How often have you made someone feel loved that appears on the outside to be unlovable?
